Facing COVID, Global Community Rallies to Support Iraqi Orphans and Vulnerable Children in 2020

ICF RELEASES ANNUAL REPORT ON EDUCATION, NUTRITION, LEGAL PROTECTION, HEALTHCARE FOR IRAQI CHILDREN

In 2020, as the world faced the challenges and dangers of COVID, the Iraqi Children Foundation (ICF) pressed forward with projects to mitigate the hardships for Iraqi children and discovered unprecedented support for the most vulnerable among them:  the orphans, street kids, child laborers, and children displaced by violence.

Liz McRae, ICF Executive Director said:  “We expected 2020 to be a tough year for our orphans and vulnerable kids.. COVID interrupted our plans and initially caused us to cut some Iraqi staff salaries by 40%. We steeled ourselves for the toughest year ever.”

Despite the odds, McRae explained, the global community came through. “We had our biggest year of fundraising in ICF history.  All staff salary cuts were restored and no staff lost their jobs. The children continue to be served with education, legal protection, nutrition, and psychosocial care.  We provided food and hygiene packages to help protect and provide more than 50,000 meals for  disadvantaged children and families facing COVID hardships in Baghdad, Mosul, Basra, and Erbil.  And we are launching new initiatives as we move forward in 2021.”
